Our Story

SafeWalks NYC began in January 2021 as a singular, selfless act of empathy: a neighbor choosing to stand in the gap for those fearing the journey home alone after a series of targeted violent attacks against women in the NYC subway system. From our initial roots in Bushwick, we rapidly expanded into Manhattan, beginning with a critical presence in Chinatown to combat the rise in hate-crime violence against the AAPI ( Asian American & Pacific Islander ) community—and grew to cover the greater New York City area. We provide a reassuring empathetic presence for any fellow New Yorker traveling alone, offering accompaniment to and from transit hubs. Yet, we have evolved beyond this initial mission into an internationally recognized security and risk operation that defies traditional categorization. The scale and sophistication of our model drew widespread attention, earning us major coverage from outlets including The New York Times, Good Morning America, ABC7, PIX11, FOX5, The New York Post, and Telemundo. We bridge the divide between the rigid, often red-tape-heavy structure of corporate security and the passion-driven, fluid nature of grassroots organizing.

By integrating rigorous security regulations and data governance with community-led agility, we built a cohesive, high-impact entity that operates with the precision of a modern security operations center. Without the billion-dollar budget of a police force like the NYPD, we successfully executed thousands of operations over years of service, achieving a record defined by both total safety for those we serve and an unwavering, incident-free history of trust. This is more than just community support; it is a future-forward model of predictive threat intelligence and risk management, proving that when compassion is architected with excellence, it becomes the most powerful security tool of all.

How Our Security & Risk Operation Serves New Yorkers

At Safe Walks, our mission is to ensure community safety. While we are often recognized by the public for our presence on the streets, our impact is rooted in a foundation of professional-grade security, rigorous risk management, and structured operational discipline.

We are not an ad-hoc volunteer effort. We are an operational security and risk organization that has architected a robust framework to protect vulnerable individuals and sensitive information under real-world adversarial conditions.

Our Operational Philosophy: Empathy-Driven Security

Our philosophy begins with empathy. We prioritize listening to victims and understanding the root of what makes people feel unsafe, rather than simply moving them from point A to B. This empathy is the catalyst for our operational rigor. By grounding our work in the lived experiences of those we protect, we have built a maturity-based trust model that treats community safety as a serious security problem set, requiring the same level of architectural precision as enterprise risk management.

Our operations are governed by clear protocols, data protection standards, and a dedication to accountability that ensures we serve the public effectively and ethically.

Organizational Structure: Maturity-Based Trust

To ensure the safety of both those we assist and our volunteers, we operate using a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) model. This structure ensures that empathy is backed by disciplined organization, where trust and access are earned through vetting and demonstrated commitment.

  • Steers: The governance and oversight layer; responsible for setting strategy, protocol, and managing highly sensitive cases.

  • Anchors: The operational coordination function; they route requests and manage real-time participation.

  • Core & Shell: Our primary operating body; trusted volunteers who uphold our protocols and values in the field.

  • Fresh/Probationary: New volunteers who undergo a rigorous vetting process and mentorship before gaining full access to the operational network.

Data Privacy & PII Protection

We operate under a strict “privacy by design” mandate, ensuring that our empathy for the individuals we serve is matched by our duty to protect their most sensitive data.

  • Data Minimization: We deliberately designed our systems to be as non-intrusive as possible, minimizing the collection of personal information from the outset.

  • Regulatory Alignment: We built our program around the standards of HIPAA and the NY SHIELD Act to ensure robust protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

  • Data Segregation: PII-bearing request forms are sequestered in a restricted channel accessible only by trained, senior-level handlers.

  • Access Lifecycle Management: We maintain strict control over our environment, including the immediate deprovisioning of access for volunteers who are no longer active.

Security Standards & Risk Controls

We have implemented a formal risk framework to govern our operations. Every action we take is guided by institutional-grade controls:

  • Threat Intelligence & Predictive Monitoring: We ingest and correlate public signals and safety data to identify emerging risks. This allows us to pre-position resources ahead of demand, providing a proactive safety layer rather than a reactive one.

  • Incident Severity Tiering: Our Highly Sensitive Case (HSC) protocol provides a structured framework for escalating incidents that require professional intervention, specialist support, or law enforcement involvement.

  • Bias Control & Governance: We maintain a strict scope of operations and an explicit anti-profiling stance, ensuring our services are delivered equitably and safely.

Commitment to Excellence

Our model has been validated by its rapid scaling and the attention it has drawn from national media and international government entities. By treating community safety as a discipline—not a hobby—we have built a sustainable system that stands as a reliable partner in the public safety landscape.

At the intersection of community trust and operational rigor, Safe Walks offers a future forward unique model for public safety; we invite prospective partners to discover how our framework can support broader security and risk objectives.

We remain proud and humbled to keep serving New Yorkers. We Keep Us Safe!
